The Rosenlund Declamation
Asker; Norway 2004
"An Ongoing-LARP is a LARP where the Drama is played out over a series of short segments in a Chronological order, Separated by periods of inaction"
The Advantages of Ongoing-LARPs
- The possibility to observe the active evolution of the character and setting in a symbiotic relationship over time.
- The possibility to involve the players, to a greater extent, in the course of the LARPs narrative ("interactive plot-structure")
- The option to make larger jumps in time and space within the narrative
- The possibility to focus the drama toward peaks in the narrative
- The potential for a much more realistic time perspective during the LARP
"Ongoing LARPs are equal; and in no greater or lesser degree art then other LARP forms"
Dos and Don'ts
- Hava a plausible reason for the Characters gathering regularly. Do not arrange unfounded sessions just to fill the squares on the calendar
- Have at-least on Introductory-meet-up Between players and Organizers before the campaign
- Game mechanics should be reduced to an absolute minimum.
- Be strict with comings and goings, be sure that all the players have a basic understanding of the setting before they are introduced to active play
- There should under no circumstances be any "main-character", the LARP should not be dependant on any single characters to function
- Be aware of any personal knowledge the players might have on the setting of narrative and utilize it actively
- Be aware of archetypes and preconceptions; use them or break them, but never ignore them.
- The setting must be rich and well-defined.
- Among the organizers there should be at least one "project-manager" whose tasks are purely practical and not related to the Fiction
- Utilize the breaks between play, keep the game alive and breathing during the downtime
- Make demands of the players during the down-time, both in relations to character-work, activity and dedication.
- Utilize the potential for active evolution over time
- Do not be afraid to varie time, place , or framework between sessions. Jumps in time or space are encouraged.
- The Ongoing LARPs we see today have a low level of preparation work. Organizing an ongoing LARP demands a lot of advance planning, atleast as much as an event-LARP
- Work with the players during character creation
- Do not be afraid to exclude players who do not show up. For the LARP to function it needs continuity. Have a sign-up before each session.
- Do not forget the 3-sphere-rule*
- Never have the Organizers in positions with in-drama authority, or positions which draw to much focus. instead utilize the organizers' characters to enhance status-quo and and the fictions reality.
- Make sure the organizes meet before every session.
- Keep the players updated, have botha pre-game briefing and a post game de-briefing
- Always have writen material available to the players concerning setting and the campaign itself.
- The organizers must present a unified fron to the players, dissagreements should not show, to avoid potential abuse and exploitation.
- Have one contact person available to the players at all times during the downtime, who can then pass the information on to the collective organizers.
- Do not be afraid to utilize the powers of an organizer.
Plot-structure for ongoing LARPs
- Relations and Intrigue, between characters are preferable to gamist "plots"
- Avoid the creations of plots that are simple or to short term
- Create living, believable persons, not characters that serve functions.
- Create Dynamic characters with the potential for change and evolution.
- Keep in mind that the characters have a longer time to explore their relations and plots then an event LARP. utilize this potential.
- He amount of organizer-control you feel is necessary to keep the plot-structure flowing is the right amount of organizer- control
- Create plot-matrixes which are updated regularly.
